Chairman's Chat 11

Posted by Daniel Goodacre on 18 May 2017

The winter season has barely finished and already summer league is upon us. Thanks to everyone on the Playing Committee, many new to their positions, for making sure that we have captains, teams, umpires and even some coaches arranged.

However, I wanted to focused this post on the four big areas the committee members will be working on over the summer. These are all critical for the sustainability and success of the club:

1) Qualifying Umpires
With our success in the league last season, we've tripled from one to three the number of pool umpires we need to provide every week. At the same time, we're sadly losing pool umpiring legends Oli Habibi and Mikey P from the club. So we're in desperate need of pool umpires, as well as qualified level 1 and candidate umpires. If you already have a qualification at any level, or are interested in getting one, please contact Umpire Development Officer Char Tyler.

2) Secure Facilities
Mile End is due to be relaid soon. Whilst this will be great in terms of getting a better pitch, we'll be working hard to ensure it's ready in time for the start of the season, so that we have somewhere to play! And thinking more long term, we'll be working with both existing and potential new pitch providers to secure long term access.

3) Defining the Selections & Membership Approach
As discussed at the AGM, the Exec Committee is aware of the need to balance the benefits that all our new members bring to the club with ensuring there is a fair and balanced policy for accommodating them. As a first step in developing the club Playing Strategy, Hockey Development Officer Sarah Watts and Head Coach Andy Moncur will be addressing this.

4) Ensure CRC Compliance
The Youth Committee, led by Simone Tudor and directed by Welfare Officer Chloe Russell, will be working to ensure we have full CRC compliance across coaches, captains and umpires. Whilst not a sexy topic, this is crucial to ensuring we are compliant in how we deal with Youth and Adults At Risk, so please do cooperate with any requests they may have of you.

Of course, these are just some of the many things going on that enable hockey to happen. Thank you to all our volunteers, be they captains, coaches, committee member or umpires, in everything they do in giving up their precision time to make the club so awesome.
