January 2017 - League Match Round-up

East London January 2017

January has been a tough month with frozen pitches, icy weather, slushy snow, rainy days and a lot of bitter-cold wind. This has led to a number of matches being postponed to later in the season and caused a fair amount of disruption. This hasn't damped spirits though, with teams keen to get back into the swing of things and finally start burning off their Christmas bellies.

East London Ladies Hockey

Antarctic conditions have taken their toll on Essex and East Women’s league so far this year, but East London is still battling hard. 100% of the women’s teams have to-date placed higher than they ever had at this point in the season, with notable mentions going to the unbeaten L6s, L1s and L2s who have taken the top spots in their leagues. Also a special mention goes out to the L3s, L7s and L5s who are in the top 3 of their tables with promotion still in sight.

The Sparrows and Ravens have rebranded to the L8s and L9s whose league is re-starting this weekend against London Royals and Tulse Hill & Dulwich. If you’re in need of fresh air on Sunday to cure post-Castle antics, come along to Mile End at 11.30am to support the L8s!

Congratulations to our top goal scorer Ann Allin for slotting in a massive 23 goals for the L6s, and to Sarah Loftus and Rosie Wood who both played for a higher team last weekend and were awarded the accolade of MoM.

East London Men’s Hockey

The Men’s 2s have started the New Year as they mean to go on by continuing in their winning form and hold tight to their top of the league status.  Men’s 8s are also on course for promotion as are the Men’s 5s, who are still unbeaten in the league and remain top, looking to join the M4s next year rather than swap places.

The Men’s 1s had a tough game losing to local rivals Wapping, intensifying their efforts on the hunt for promotion but they hope to make up points in the coming weeks. Men’s 6s and 7s are both still pushing in their league with the 6s 3 points from a promotion spot.

Continuing to draw enough games to stay just above relegation the Men’s 4s had a tough round results in January, rumour has is Captain Freddie is demanding better from his players next month.

Struggling to get back into the swing of things, Men’s 3s are yet to win a game this side of Christmas, which means this week the only way is up!
