Preseason Taining

There will be a 45 minute fitness session meeting outside the astro starting at 7.45 for the Men's 1s and any other keen members.

Tough Start to Season for East London Men

The 2010/11 fixtures have been announced and the Men’s league begins again on 25th September. The Men’s 1st XI face a stern first test as they travel away to play Blueharts 2nd IX in Hitchin. The Blueharts finished mid table in East Division 2S last season and the newly promoted Londoners will want to start the season with a good result to prove their ability at this level.

The 2nd XI face Romford 1s in a tasty encounter between the two East End sides. Not only is there history between the sides but they have faced each other twice over the summer league, with many goals and incidents in both. East did win both of the previous encounters, but this match still promises to be a great opening fixture at the Mile End Stadium.

Ben Tanner, the newly installed captain of the 3rd XI, has a very tight game against Upminster 4s who were promoted along with his side from 6SE last year. The Upminster squad only lost out to East by 2 points last season, so the opening match could be a nervous affair.

The Men’s 4th XI complete an Upminster double header, playing the 5th XI at Mile End Stadium. Finally, Oli Habibi’s 5th XI travel to Saffron Walden to begin their season in 9SE.

Training Update

As of September, training will be extended to 7.00pm to 10.00pm at Mile End. This is a great opportunity for the club to give every member a fair amount of pitch time. The committee have decided how the time will be broken down, and are planning training strategy with Andy, our head coach.

Practically what this means is that the club training session will be split again as it has been in the past, however every player will get one and a half hours training.

More details will be released soon, but the set up will be:

If you are unsure which session you should train at, please speak to either Steve Canwell (Mens Club Captain) or Zoe Marsden (Ladies Club Captain).

Please Note Once a month, on the first Monday of the month, the 7.00-8.30pm slot is not available. On these occasions the 8.30-10pm session will be a Club Training session where every member is invited.

Saturday 25/09/2010 Roundup

Saturday saw the opening day of the men’s season with some thrilling encounters on offer. The first team kick started their campaign with a potentially testing away fixture against division 2 stalwarts Blueharts. After a cagey first 15 ELHC broke the deadlock when a well worked move left the Blueharts keeper stranded at his near post, giving marauding right back James Cook space to finish into the bottom corner. The lead lasted all of 5 minutes before the home side took full advantage of some standoffish defending and suspect goalkeeping to equalize. At this point the game could have gone either way, but the East Londoners held their nerve playing some good flowing hockey to score 3 unanswered goals before the half, two of these coming from the stick of captain Adam Larkin with a well placed penalty stroke and a looping drag flick from a penalty corner both succeeding in finding the net. With the score at 4-1 going into the second half the result looked all but settled and despite some early pressure from the home side that was well soaked up by the ELHC defence, the Sparrow Hawks ran out a 7-1 lead by the close of play thanks to some ruthless finishing from forwards Roeland Doust and Dan Hyden.

The Ladies 1s continued their strong start to the season with a week 2 win over Colchester. Some slick hockey and a well timed substitution led to the first goal with Emily Conquest stepping off the bench to slot home with her first touch of the ball after 20 minutes. The lead was doubled before the half when East London’s attacking flare again proved too much for the Colchester defence and Robyn Shears was able to set up Eilis Quinlan for the second. Some early jitters in the 2nd period were punished when the East London keeper conceded a penalty stroke but the two goal advantage was restored when Jo Lee provided a strong finish for ELHC’s third. A set piece goal from Colchester in the last five minutes served only as a consolation with the game ending 3-2 at the final whistle.

The mens 2s fought out a 3-3 draw at home against Romford. For captain Collis’s full match analysis, click here.

The 3rd team were 4-1 victors in their game at Upminster despite playing the first half without a goalkeeper. 2 goals a piece from Gabby Oduro and Ben Tanner wrapped this one up, for the full story see Ben’s report here.

The 4s took a point from their goalless game against Upminster 5s. Despite enjoying the majority of possession and the lion’s share of the chances a strong performance from Upminster’s defence and goalkeeper ensured Berni’s boys weren’t able to snatch the win.

The 5th team found themselves on the receiving end of a 5-0 defeat away at Saffron Walden. The score line was 0-0 at the 50 minute mark but the early season lack of stamina was seized upon by the home side in the final 20. For the full run down check out Oli’s notes on the mens 5s page.

The Ladies 2s went down 3-2 to Old Loughtonians 5s despite goals from Mieke Tonkin and Lana Moseby.

Saturday 02/10/2010 Results Roundup

Week two of the mens season saw the men in Orange attempt to build on their convincing opening day victory with a good performance in their first home fixture against Bishops Stortford. After a poor start the Sparrow Hawks were just beginning to find their feet when a Bishops Stortford penalty corner effort found the net to send them 1-0 down. The game continued at a frantic pace with missed opportunities at both ends meaning the score remained unchanged going into half time.

East London came out strong after the break looking to draw level but were again pegged back as a break by the visitors stretched the Londoner’s defence, leaving a man unmarked at the far post to touch home and double the deficit. At 2-0 down with 25 to go ELHC continued to play positively and were eventually reward when Dan Hyden latched onto the rebound from a Kevin Taylor shot. With a second wind under their wings East London struck again, this time from the stick of Adam Willoughby, to draw level. Despite having much the better of the chances in the remaining 10 minutes the Sparrow Hawks were unable to make the pressure tell and were undone at the last when a penalty corner was deflected in off defender Steve Pecks foot in the dying seconds. A disappointing 3-2 final result drops ELHC off the top spot in Div 2 South.

The East London ladies continued their impressive start to the season in the Essex Premier Division with a 1-0 win over local rivals Wapping. In truth the result does not do justice to the dominance that ELHC enjoyed throughout much of the game. Constant pressure was only thwarted by last ditch defending and some excellent goalkeeping from Wapping’s lady between the sticks. The winning goal finally came late in the second half.

Their second win in three games leaves the ladies poised to make an assault on the top spots in the Essex Premier Division in the coming weeks.

The Mens 2s came back from 1-0 down to beat Old Southendians 2s 2-1 after a rabble rousing team talk from Capt. Collis at half time, for his full match run down check out the report here

The Mens 3rd team suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Old Southendians 3s. Despite some decent play and some heroics in goal from part time keeper Sam Phillips the boys weren’t able to live with the occasionally clinical finishing of the visitors.

Berni’s boys took a point from their game against the imaginatively named Old Loughtonian Woodsmen (not sure what that says about their tackling). The 4s were unlucky not to take all 3 points from this having gone 1-0 up in the first half, for Berni’s match notes click here

The Mens 5s game was unfortunately cancelled and has now, I am reliably informed, been awarded as a win to ELHC so well done to Oli and the 5s for their efficient performance. To see Oli’s musings on a cancelled fixture click here

The Ladies 2s played out a scoreless draw away at Harlow.

Press Reports Saturday 20th of November

It was another good weekend for East London Hockey with the mens 1s taking a point from their 3-3 battle with Southend while the ladies 1s romped to a 5-0 win at Mile End over visitors Havering.

ELHC’s Ladies continued their assault on the summit of the Essex Premier division with an excellent all round performance at home against Havering. Despite possession being fairly evenly shared between the teams throughout, it was East London’s quality at both ends of the pitch that proved the deciding factor. Excellent shot stopping from Anna Falconer in the East London net was backed up by clinical finishing from the forwards to ensure the convincing victory. Goals from Zoe Marsden, Emma Chadwick and Sophie Williams, along with a brace from Eilis Quinlan gave ELHC a 5-0 lead at the final whistle.

East London’s men could hardly have had a worse start to their trip to the coast, with 7 squad members unavailable and two failing to appear on the day, only 10 Sparrowhawks made the journey to face a Southend side that had been enjoying some excellent results in recent weeks. There were some understandably nervy moments in the opening ten minutes of the game as ELHC tried to adjust to being a man down and unsurprisingly conceded the first goal of the game without having ventured into the opposition half. It wasn’t long however before the 10 East Londoners started to find their rhythm and after a number of promising breaks they struck back with a text book short corner routine.

Despite going behind again before the half time break the ELHC men came out for the second half determined to leave with at least a share of the points. However, when Southend struck again and brought fresh legs on from the sideline an East London comeback began to look unlikely. With twenty minutes to go however the tide turned and the Sparrowhawks immediately took advantage with a goal rifled home by Adam Lord from the top of the D. Although they were still a goal down East London had Southend on the back foot and began to dominate the midfield. In the closing minutes a break by Chris Jones found right back James Cook free at the far post to touch home the equalizer and plunder a point for the men in Orange.

Another incredible result for the Club this weekend was the Mens 4s 17-0 demolition of Waltham Forest’s 4th team in Division 8SE.

Press Reports Saturday 08th of January

With adverse weather conditions in December hampering fixtures and training alike the men and women of East London Hockey Club returned to action at the weekend looking to blow away the cobwebs of an extended Christmas break.

East’s ladies resumed hostilities in the Essex premier division with a home tie against fellow promotion chasers Colchester. East London’s first half performance was as polished as you would expect from a team who only failed to take points from two of their fixtures in the first half of the season. Goals from Eilis Quinlan and Sophie Williams, along with a tight defensive display and excellent work from first time stand in keeper Emma Chadwick, gave ELHC a rock solid looking 2-0 lead at half time. Colchester seemed to find another gear after the break however and quickly reduced the deficit with a well worked goal. Despite again going two behind after a short corner finish from East London’s Zoe Marsden the Colchester comeback was sealed with two goals in the closing minutes making the final result 3-3.

ELHC’s men began the new year with a must win game against Saffron Walden who sat just one point beneath them in East Division 2 when they met at Mile End on Saturday. In a cagey game that was characterised by a lack of sharpness in front of goal from both sides, it was a finish that was both bizarre and fortuitous in equal measures that proved the deciding factor. With 15 minutes to go in the first half, and after a decent period of build up play by the Sparrowhawks, the ball fell to winger Chris Jones at the top of the Saffron Walden D. The shot that followed was unquestionably not his best, miscueing towards the right corner flag, only for it to take a huge deflection off the foot of the closing defender and loop past the wrong footed keeper into the far left hand corner of the net for the only goal of the game.

The second half was a scrappy affair but East London will take heart from their defensive display, solid performances from centre backs Simon Hughes and Steve Peck shutting out Saffron Walden and ensuring the narrow victory.

Press Reports Saturday 22nd of January

It was a clean sweep for the Sparrowhawks on Saturday with dominant performances from both the men’s and Lady’s sides ensuring that they kept their respective league aspirations for this season on track.

The men took a trip to Bishops Stortford and continued their recent good away form with an unflappable display against their mid table rivals. East London’s Chris Jones opened the scoring mid way through the first half, finishing a well rehearsed short corner routine with a guided deflection at the near post. The Sparrowhawks were on the scoresheet again within ten minutes when Adam Willoughby latched onto a cross from Right Back James Cook to touch past the stranded keeper. The game was then all but wrapped up when ELHC struck the backboard for the third time seconds before the half time whistle, with in form striker Adam Lord again poaching at the far post to add to his increasingly impressive goal tally.

Bishops Stortford looked disconsolate when they came out for the second half and rarely achieved any periods of prolonged possession with good pressure from ELHC reducing them to long balls and aerials in their attempts to get out of their own half. The inevitable fourth and final goal of the game came as Adam Willoughby took advantage of a defensive error to slot home his second of the game.

East London’s ladies put visitors Basildon to the sword at Mile End on Saturday, brushing them aside with the sort of clinical play that is fast becoming the hallmark of women’s hockey at ELHC. In a game that could easily have ventured towards a real embarrassment for the visiting side the 8-2 final scoreline was probably a fair depiction of the gulf in class between these two sides.

Press Reports Saturday 29th of January

It was an understated weekend for ELHC’s top teams with the Ladies only gaining a point from their trip to Harlow and the men going down 2-1 to Plashet in an ill tempered game at Mile End.

East London’s ladies went into saturday’s fixture looking to increase their unbeaten run to 7 games and despite a shaky start, going a goal down shortly after push back, they looked to be on track to do so as they began to dominate possession and ask questions of the Harlow defense. True to form East London were quick to wipe out the deficit and then pushed on to build a healthy lead with goals from Eilis Quinlan, Robyn Shears and a brace from Zoe Marsden.

With time running down in the second half it looked as though East London’s ladies were in for another solid victory. Harlow weren’t so keen to roll over however and began to push back, winning a series of penalty corners. Three of the corners were duly converted leaving a shell shocked East London to consider how they had let their lead slip and the game finish as it did 4-4.

ELHC’s men went into Saturday’s game against Plashet well aware of what their opponents were capable of both in terms of the undeniable skill of some of their players, but also the confrontational way in which they often conduct themselves on the hockey pitch.

A relatively good natured and closely fought first half saw Plashet take a narrow 1-0 advantage into the half time break and they were quick to double their lead in the second period when an East London defensive error gave them an opportunity in front of goal. It was the Sparrowhawk’s first goal from the stick of Alex Kickham that proved an unfortunate turning point in the match marking as it did a noticeable deterioration in the mood of a number of the visiting players.

Much of what followed made the remainder of the game almost farcical and by the final whistle many were left asking why they had bothered turning up for a game where good sportsmanship had clearly gone out of the window.

On a more positive note it would be remiss not to mention the Mens 3s and 4s cleaning up in their games against Wapping, with thumping 8-3 and 5-1 victories respectively, ensuring that the bragging rights remain firmly in ELHC's hands.

Press Reports Saturday 5th of February

Saturday’s fixtures proved a mixed bag for ELHC’s top teams with the Men traveling to Witham looking to avenge their loss from the first half of the season and the Lady’s making the short trip to mid table Old Loughtonians.

East London’s men arrived at Witham with a point to prove having lost 7-4 in their clash at Mile End before christmas. After a subdued start, mostly due to the unusually slow playing surface and very high winds, the Sparrowhawks began to dominate the game, creating numerous chances in the Witham D. By the time East London winger Dan Hyden found himself unmarked at the back post to fire home the first goal the home side’s heads had already begun to drop. At the half time whistle the score remained 1-0 but it seemed inevitable that ELHC would add to their lead in the second period, and so proved to be the case when strikes from Kevin Taylor and a second from Dan Hyden in quick succession took East London’s tally to 3 and effectively knocked any remaining fight out of the home side.

There was a slight wobble from East London when centre back Simon Hughes was given a ten minute suspension for a ‘robust’ challenge and Witham looked to push forward, however this only served to give Steve Canwell the space to stretch his legs on a pitch length break that resulted in the Sparrowhawks fourth. Witham Managed a solitary goal in the closing minutes but will take little consolation from a game in which they were so clearly out played.

On evidence of the league table and recent form, ELHC’s Lady’s would have been expecting a decent result from their game at Old Loughtonians, but found themselves facing far stiffer opposition than they might have anticipated. After seeing an early goal controversially disallowed East London struggled to impose themselves on the game and find the sort of fluid play that has made them so effective throughout this year.

Going into half time 2-1 down is unfamiliar territory for the ladies this season and despite a second half goal from Luisa Muethel they never really settled into the game, conceding again before the close to come away with a disappointing 3-2 loss. This result may well be the final nail in terms of promotion prospects this season with the top spot in the Essex Premier division now a daunting ten points away.

John Drew

It is with great sadness that East London HC announces the death of John Drew. Some or most of you may not have had the honor of knowing John but the fact that East London is now as big a club as it is, is in part down to it's success in it's earlier years. Success then was measured more on a social scale as well as on pitch. John was a major player in this success. Anybody who met John would never be able to forget him. His renditions of Delilah and Ernie had people singing along in Belgium, Italy, France, Scotland, the isle of Man and up the Mile End Rd. John was full of life and people could never understand how someone could enjoy themselves so much without being drunk. John had a presence about him that infected others with his enthusiasm. He was a rock in a hard place for many people and even when he had problems of his own, he would put others first. He will be missed by very many people and hockey tours will never be the same again. To John's son, Ben, we hope that some day soon you will come to know what a great man your dad was and how deeply he affected peoples lived.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this very sad time.

Haloween Party / Pub Golf

Just in case you didn't know, satruday the 29th is ELHC Haloween social. My favourite social of the year and a guaranteed good time!

As is tradition we'll be doing fancy dress pub golf. Meet at 18:50 in LHT (aka Urban Bar) opposite whitechapel tube and we'll be making our way down to the New Globe.

The upstairs part of the new globe will be decked out in suitably spooky attire for partying into the night and you can elect to head straight to the new globe from 20:00 if you'd prefer to miss the drinking challenge that is Pub Golf. Fancy dress is still strongly advised !

See you there boys and ghouls.
