ELHC match report

Saturday's Matches

Men’s 4s

The M4s played Havering 2s on Saturday and came away with a convincing 5-1 victory. It was a fun game enjoyed by all (apart from Havering).East dominated with 5 different goalscorers and the majority of possession. They scored a couple from short corners too, bringing this season’s tally up to 4 which might be more than the whole of last season!

Ladies 2s

The L2s took on Maldon at Lee Valley. With positive words of encouragement from coach Oli, they were inspired with a winning team mentality. Unfortunately they went 1-0 down in the first 10 minutes, but this didn’t throw them. They started to create lots of great linking play, which created lots of great opportunities and then lots of goals too! They continued to push in the second half and fitness prevailed, with a cracking final score of 7-2.

Ladies 6s

L6s went away to Romford. After a warm up in which the team managed to injure their star goalie and an umpire related confusion which led to players stepping up to umpire the match, the team wasn’t quite sure what to expect. East didn’t let this phase them and it was clear early on that they were the better side scoring a fantastic 9 goals in the first half. Relentless in their attack, the L6s scored 4 more goals in the second half. Unfortunately, there was a slightly bitter end as Romford vowed to go to the league and contest the result.

Men’s 8s

After a great start to the season, the M8s looked to continue their great form away against Crostyx 4s. For a while it looked like they were on track, dominating the early stages and scoring the opening goal. But Crostyx began to get into the game and a few minutes later they counter attacked and eventually got the goal they deserved. The second half consisted of counter attacks from both teams with East giving away countless shorts. Then out of nowhere the M8s broke into the D and smashed it home and leaving everyone speechless. The shock was still evident at the final whistle and 2-1 was a great result for East as Crostyx were a very professional and fit team.

Ladies 7s

Ladies 7s lost 3-2 to the Southend & Benfleet 3s. Rain didn't get in the way but there was a strong smell of Vix vapo rub coming from East’s slightly poorly team. The ball was passed around the team better than last week and by half-time the score was even at 2-2. In the second half the opposition scored their winning goal from a short corner. Despite picking it up the tempo and getting a lot more aggressive towards their goal East did not equalise.

Ladies 4s

The L4s absolutely smashed it at the weekend winning 7-1 against Brentwood 3. After a dodgy first ten minutes due to the relaxed 4pm start, they slotted in two lovely goals to lift the heads of the team. From then on, it was wave after wave of attack with goals.

Men’s 6s

The M6s trailed off the Crostyx pitch a weary and dejected bunch, bemoaning a lamentable second half performance. In fact, they won the match 4-3, but they weren’t satisfied by their performance. The score could have been worse had the first half not been decent and the forward line clinical at shorts. The second half, about which we do not speak, except to record the single goal on our only excursion up the pitch, was not very good. Rumours were it was because of the lack of Haribo.

Men’s 1s

On a rainy morning the M1s hosted a newly promoted Blueharts team at Lee Valley. They were keen to bounce back from a tough match last week, even getting to the pitch early to get in some extra practice. It’s safe to say it paid off. The game started well with East grabbing the first goal after some intricate play. They piled on the pressure and were rewarded with a second intricate goal. During half-time they honed their tactics to perfection and then the goals flooded in. East scored a further 5 goals, really showing their fitness as the Bluehart's defence slowed and the M1s pushed through. A fantastic final score of 7-0.

Ladies 3s

Saturday's hockey performed by the L3s against Upminster 3s started off like an awkward first date. A few fumbles and a couple of chances to take things further... The L3s soon found their stride and started running some lovely lines. The opposition were so overwhelmed with East’s charisma and charm. With the L3s confidence up, they slotted one in, taking a 1-0 lead. Knowing things were going well, they started to play better as a team and communication was strong. Then, with surgical precision, East carved through the crowded D to find the backboard again. This was followed up by another clean strike and the L3s were 3-0 up. The oppo were blown away, but tried to play hard to get by counter scoring although we all knew we'd won them over. Final score 3-1.

Ceylan - ELHC

Ladies 1s

L1s journeyed to Havering to battle against some tough opposition, including TfL! The whatsapp was swamped with different journey plans due to the district line being down. After a great warm up, showing the team had clear vision, East began the game well with great passing and sharp shots. This led to their first goal and soon secured a second, taking the score to 2-0 at half-time. Despite hard pressing from Havering and many defensive corners against our L1s, they simply couldn't score. Well done to a very strong defence from our L1s.

Men’s 3s

Keeping their form consist, the M3s lost 2-1 to Redbridge and Ilford 1s. In the game there were some saves from the keeper and a very impressive short corner drag-flick goal. However this wasn’t enough to secure the M3s first win of the season. Better luck next week!

Ladies 5s

The L5s hopped on the party bus to Southend and Benfleet. It was a frustrating start with the opposition only providing one umpire instead of two. (This seemed to be the story of the weekend!) Again, East showed their amazing team spirit with one of the team stepping in to umpire instead of play. Without getting into to the match too much, there was good passing, and strong block and jab tackling which kept the opposition on their toes. But sadly this wasn’t enough, with the L5s losing 5-2. However, they keep their cool throughout to win the game of cards 1-0.

Men’s 2s

Inspired by the M1s, the M2s went off to Brentwood in search of their next victory. With their captain back on the sideline, they were in for a difficult game. They started well by scoring a short corner to go 1-0 but then the rest of the first-half was less than impressive, ending 2-1 down. There was some mix-up with the half-time Haribo but that doesn’t matter because Haribo are for winners and they were not winners, at this point at least. The M2s captain expressed his dissatisfaction in a normal, calm and collected way which the team understood well enough and the second half was much improved. Some really good team goals saw the M2s coming away with a 4-2 victory when the final whistle eventually blew.

Men’s 5s

In what should have been a clinical win for the M5s, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. It transpired they were supposed to provide an umpire (more umpire issues...). Fortunately, more great teamwork from East saw two players alternately fill-in. Sadly, this meant they were down to a bare 11. Undeterred, East scored in the first half, at which point they should have put they match to bed. End to end hockey ensued, with a sterling performance from the backs, keeping the opposition firmly in their back pockets. However, after their 18362nd short corner, the opposition nicked a goal. The 1-1 draw was seen by the opposition as a win, but the M5s saw it as a loss which says a lot.

Men’s 7s

The M7s welcomed Basildon ODFs to a very very wet Mile End for the early push back. Taking an early lead, the M7s started strongly pushing the opposition back into their own half with constant attacks. But with a bare 11 players, tiredness soon kicked in and the M7s found themselves 2-1 down at the break. More of the same followed after the break. The M7s pushed up, Basildon pushed back. The final score ended in a 2-2 draw. The same agonising score as last week!

Sunday's Matches

Ladies 2s - Cup game

On Sunday, L2's played in the first round of the Knockout 2nd XI Cup against Old Loughts L2s. Knowing they were currently top of the league above the L2s, East knew they would face a tough opposition. From the off East pushed ahead, kept structure and really challenged Loughts. Two goals slipped past East by half-time but they weren’t deterred. They pulled together and continued to pile on the pressure, and despite a few East shorts and opportunities, Loughts popped another goal in to conclude the game a 0-3 loss.

Mixed 2s

The Mixed 2s entered the sandy domain of Walthamstow Academy to take on Waltham Forest  looking surprisingly chipper for a Sunday morning. The match pushed off with a fast pace and some exciting, free-flowing hockey. The first half saw lots of good chances failing to reach the backboard with East unable to capitalise on the silky hockey they were playing. But in the second half East managed to take the lead with some good team play leading to an unexpected lobbing of the keeper with a reverse strike. Final result: 1-0.

Ladies 8s and 9s - Sparrows v Ravens derby match

The Sparrows, playing in Orange, hosted the Ravens, in Blue, at Mile End for an exciting East London derby. The Blues had a slight advantage in the first half, with some amazing goalkeeping, while the Oranges didn't have a goalie. The match started with pressure from the Blues, which quickly turned into a series of attacks by the Oranges, Thanks to some great defending, the Blues were able to the tables turned going on the attack and scoring a belter past the Orange's sweeper. In the second half, the Oranges continued to show fortitude and grit. Despite the Oranges' best efforts, the Blues eventually managed to sneak a ball passed the keeper for a second time. Final score: Sparrows (Orange) 0-2 Ravens (Blue)

Juniors

An amazing result for the East London Under-14 Boys who won their first 11-a-side match ever over the weekend. They joined forces with Waltham Forest HC (making East Forest) in the Mercian Development League. They beat Upminster 8-3 (counting as 5-3). Next match in two weeks against Hampstead & Westminster!
